Dan Mullen?!?!

I'd much rather live in Blacksburg then Starkeville, but is he really that great of a candidate? After all this is the man who gave us this:

What he's done with "Miss St" has been pretty damn great IMO...I don't like or hate Mullen but to have had any decent teams has been a pretty great job considering all of the heavy hitters that he's had to recruit against...all in his region. I mean outside of going to Starkeville to play for Mullen there is no reason to go there. Their teams are decent and good the last few years before Mullen they sucked for a LONG time.

They may want him, but I don;t see how that could possibly the job he would leave for.

It would be easier to win there than it is at Miss St. And that region has a lot of good players. If he could keep them home he'd own the ACC most years. VT is a sleeping giant.

Own the Coastal maybe. They will never recruit as good as FSU or Clemson no matter who's coach.

Clemson doesn't have a strong recruiting base, definitely not anywhere as strong as the VA/DC area. They have plucked a few elite players the past few years from Georgia and Florida, but typically they're getting second and third choices from those states. I'll give you FSU and Miami if they ever get back. But those are the only two schools with a better area for recruiting in the ACC than VT.

Memphis’ Justin Fuente has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Beamer, to the point where there already have been some preliminary negotiations. Memphis announced last week that it had made what it called “an extraordinary offer” earlier this season in an effort to keep Fuente. But leaving Memphis for Virginia Tech is a no-brainer.

Clemson doesn't have a strong recruiting base? Do you even map? They're an hour and a half from Atlanta. They get a ton of guys out of Georgia every year. Plus they get FL guys that VT has no shot at.

While I agree that the Newport News/ Tidewater area produces some nice talent its never been like they all go to Blacksburg. UVa, Maryland, Penn State, and FSU/ UF go in there regularly. Not to mention Blacksburg is damn near in West Virginia. It's not next door.

I think many people are overrating the VT job. It's an average job at best. They don't have any decided advantage over a dozen or so schools in the area. The SEC raids the east coast as does the Northwest and Big 10. We already discussed this. The Tidewater area produces great talent but not enough talent for 1 program to flourish and not to mention many programs go into that area to recruit.

There are only 2 schools in the ACC that recruit any good and that is Clemson and FSU. No other school in the ACC recruits good on a consistent basis.

I was thinking the same thing...Mullen has ties to the south and he'll get players...he could do really well in the ACC. VT is a good football school too over the last 20 years.

Mullen also has ties to the northeast since he is from PA. So the northeast and south connections combo would serve well at a place like VA Tech.
