Three Takeaways from Florida’s loss versus LSU

The Florida Gators dropped their third game of the season as they lost to the LSU Tigers 45-35 last Saturday. The Gators’ offense looked good for most of the game, but the defense was unbelievably bad.

The Florida Gators’ defense could not stop LSU’s offense last Saturday, as they allowed over 500 yards of total offense. It was a very tough game to watch for Florida fans as they head into their bye week. Here are my three takeaways from Florida’s loss to the LSU Tigers.

1. Embarrassing defensive performance

The Florida Gators’ defense just played their worst defensive game this season. Florida had no answers for Jayden Daniels and the Tigers offense. Not only did Florida give up a ton of yards, but they could not stop LSU on third downs.

The Florida Gators have the worst third-down defense in the country. They allowed the opposing offenses to convert on third down 52.6% of the time. Florida’s defense also ranked 106th on total defense, allowing 429.3 yards per game.

Jayden Daniels and the LSU Tigers completely overmatched Florida’s defense. Daniels had six touchdowns in the game (three passing and three rushing) and had 393 all-purpose yards last weekend. Just an absolutely embarrassing performance by the Gators’ defense.

2. Anthony Richardson plays turnover-free football

For the first time since week one, Florida’s quarterback Anthony Richardson did not turn over the football in a game. He has had some struggles with turnovers this season but protected the football.

Richardson had a solid game and was one of the reasons Florida was in the game late in the fourth quarter. Richardson completed 15 out of 25 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a team-high 109 yards on nine carries, including an 81-yard rushing touchdown.

While Richardson protected the football, he was still inconsistent in the passing game. The Gainesville native did not play a perfect game, but it was enough that Florida should have won the game. Another positive takeaway from this game was that the Florida offense did not give up and fought until the end when they were down by three touchdowns heading into the fourth quarter.

3. Lorenzo Lingard passes Nay’Quan Wright on the depth chart

One surprise from the Florida-LSU game was Lorenzo Lingard getting reps as the Gators’ third running back. Lingard mostly plays on special teams at Florida while getting some carries in blowout wins.

However, Lingard got meaningful snaps at running back on Saturday and looked good when his number was called. The former Miami transfer rushed for sixteen yards on three carries. He also caught one pass for seven yards that converted a 3rd & 6 in the red zone.

It was nice to see Lingard play well when his number was called, especially since he’s been waiting for his opportunity for a long time. Now, what goes this mean for Nay’Quan Wright? Will Lingard be RB3 for the rest of the game, and what will Florida do with Wright?
