This is a list of Gator recruiting targets and is solely the opinion of Justin Wells and does not represent the opinion of the University of Florida or anyone associated with the Gator program.

QUARTERBACK
Needs: 1

Aaron Murray (6-1, 200, 4.7) Tampa (FL) Plant
Murray currently holds 50 offers, and is considered by many to be among the top-three QB prospects in the nation. UGA has made it quite a race for his services, many thought Murray would be a Gator…but it is now expected that he should commit to the ‘Dawgs in the coming days.

Eugene Smith (6-3, 175, 4.7) Miramar (FL) Miramar
Was named to the Class 6A second team all-state team. In an October match-up, Smith threw for over 500 yards against Patrick Johnson and Pompano Beach Ely. 2,500 yards and 32 TD’s passing on the season. The early favorites for Smith’s signature are Florida, Michigan, West Virginia, and LSU. With it looking more likely that Murray will head to Georgia, Smith becomes even more of a priority for the Florida staff.

Kevin Newsome (6-3, 210, 4.57) Chesapeake (VA) Western Branch
Newsome is a big, thick, athletic looking QB who reminds me of former Jacksonville product Patrick Sapp when watching him on film. He currently does not have an offer from Florida. Newsome is currently wide-open but many believe Michigan currently holds the upper hand in the race to land Newsome.

Rob Henry (6-2, 192, 4.55) Ocala (FL) Trinity Catholic
Talented local prospect is one to keep an eye on, especially if any attrition occurs at the QB position, as he would likely be the first prospect to get attention from the staff in the event that someone at the position were to leave the program. Henry is a great athlete, who could get a look at other positions if quarterback does not work out for him on the next level.

Others to watch:
Dontae Aycock (5-11, 190, 4.5) Tampa (FL) Chamberlain
Tajh Boyd (6-2, 195, 4.7) Hampton (VA) Phoebus
Tate Forcier (6-1, 187, 4.63) San Diego (CA) Scripps Ranch
Ryan Mossokowski (6-5, 200) Frisco (TX) Centennial
Morgan Newton (6-4, 205) Carmel (IN) Carmel
Jordan Reed (6-4, 220, 4.5) New London (CT) New London

Analysis: With Murray seemingly headed to Georgia…I fully believe Eugene Smith will end up a Gator. Boyd, Henry, Newsome, and Newton seem to figure into the plans at QB as well, however.

RUNNING BACK
Needs: 1-2

Lamar Miller (5-11, 205, 4.4) Miami (FL) Killian
Considered by many to be one of the top RB’s in the country, if not THE top RB in the country. He finished the 2007 campaign with 1,126 yards on 154 carries and 12 TD’s. Most observers in Florida feel that Miami is the team to beat for his services.

Jamaal Berry (5-11, 190, 4.43) Miami (FL) Palmetto
While Berry isn’t nearly as highly regarded as his Miami counterpart in Lamar Miller, Berry has comparable physical numbers, and actually had a better season in 2007 than Miller (higher ypc average, more TD’s). As of now, I think Berry provides Florida it’s best chance to land a “marquee” RB prospect in this class. UGA, FSU, Clemson, Ohio State, and Miami are also very much in the running for Berry’s signature.
Desmond Scott (5-9, 180, 4.47) Durham (NC) Hillside
I debated on where to put Scott. Seeing as I don’t believe the staff would be interested in taking another undersized back…I figured he could be added in as an Athlete. However, because RB is his primary position, he will be left here until it can be confirmed he is being targeted for another position. An excellent football player who the Gators are very interested in. Other contenders include Clemson, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Lonnie Pryor (6-1, 192, 4.5) Okeechobee (FL) Okeechobee
Tall, lanky runner whose build harkens back to that of Ciatrick Fason. Pryor is a big-time FSU fan, and I would be surprised if he ended up anywhere other than Tallahassee. Nonetheless, the Florida staff continues a strong pursuit of Pryor.

Trent Richardson (5-10.5, 210) Pensacola (FL) Escambia
Richardson is simply a tremendous talent. He’s athletic and shifty enough to slash through defenses, but isn’t afraid to plow anyone over as well. I would be surprised if he doesn’t continue to become more of a priority for Florida. Alabama, Florida State, and Texas are also squarely in the running for Richardson as well.

Jarvis Giles (5-11, 175, 4.5) Tampa (FL) Gaither
After making a spring trip to Gainesville to attend a practice, Florida is in much better shape for Giles, who previously had been looking very strongly at Tennessee. The name of the game for Giles is speed. His game definitely fits in well with the fast, athletic players who litter the Florida roster.

Ben Axon (6-2, 205, 4.5) Bradenton (FL) Manatee
This is my “player to watch” at the RB position. He doesn’t currently hold an offer from the Gators, but I suspect that will change somewhere down the line. Axon is an all-around talent who will provide some team with a strong presence at the RB position.

Others to watch:
D.J. Adams (5-10, 205) Norcross (GA) Norcross
Adarius Bellamy (5-9, 210) Dunedin (FL) Dunedin
Henry Dixon (5-10, 192, 4.4) Sharpsburg (GA) East Coweta
Diante Drake (5-11, 198, 4.48) Lawrenceville (GA) Central Gwinnett
Daquan Hargrett (5-9, 180, 4.5) Miami (FL) Northwestern
Tyresse Jones (5-9, 185, 4.4) Miami (FL) Northwestern
Eddie Lacey (5-11, 200, 4.5) Geismar (LA) Dutchtown
Hasan Lipscomb (5-11, 200, 4.38) Houston (TX) Cypress Ridge
Al-Terek McBurse (6-0, 180, 4.4) Winter Springs (FL) Winter Springs
Nyshier Oliver (5-10, 170, 4.4) Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter’s Prep
Greg Pratt (5-8, 164, 4.4) Naples (FL) Naples
Rodney Scott (5-9, 180) Cross City (FL) Dixie County
Vincent Smith (5-9, 175) Pahokee (FL) Pahokee
Trabis Ward (5-9, 200, 4.5) Fort Lauderdale (FL) Dillard
James Washington (5-10, 165, 4.62) Orlando (FL) Boone
De’Antwan Williams (5-7, 207, 4.5) Woodbridge (VA) Woodbridge
Toney Williams (6-1, 227, 4.7) Alpharetta (GA) Milton
Jeremy Wright (5-9, 183, 4.51) Clermont (FL) East Ridge

Analysis: As of now, I really think Florida is only going to take one RB in this class, and my choice of now is Jamaal Berry, although Trent Richardson is also a possibility as well. It will be interesting to see what transpires at this position for 2009. One thing is for sure, there is definitely a plethora of good prospects to chose from.

RECEIVER
Needs: 2-3

Marlon Brown (6-4, 205) Memphis (TN) Harding Academy
Brown is considered to be the top WR prospect in the country by many. He is a two-sport star who is just as talented on the hardwood as he is on the gridiron. Watching Brown on film, he shows incredible body control, agility, and lateral movement in a guy who is 6-4. Just a great all-around receiver. He sports offers from nearly every top program in the country, and is about as open as a top prospect could be.
Andre Debose (6-0, 175, 4.43) Sanford (FL) Seminole
Debose is believed to be a (if not the) top priority on the board. The comparison to Percy gets thrown out there…and while he isn’t the exact same player, it’s easy to see that he can do a lot of the same things as Harvin. Quite simply, the staff sees him as a must-get player, and Florida has an excellent shot at him, along with his childhood favorite, Florida State.

Nu’Keese Richardson (5-9, 160, 4.41) Pahokee (FL) Pahokee
Top Junior wideout is considered one of the best in the country. Open early on, the success of Deonte Thompson and Janoris Jenkins from the Muck could persuade Richardson to give Florida a very close look as he makes a decision. At this early stage of the game, Richardson claims South Carolina as his leader.

Jheranie Boyd (6-3, 185, 4.45) Gastonia (NC) Ashbrook
Boyd’s tape is ridiculous, and the staff has jumped all over him. He recorded 47 receptions for 1,051 yards last year, with 11 touchdowns. Boyd also claims a sub-11.0 100m, and the kicker…a 44-inch vertical. His leaping ability is impressive when you watch him on tape, as is the all-around package. Top competition should come from Clemson, N.C. State, Miami, Illinois, and Southern Cal.

Ricco Sanders (5-11, 175, 4.4) Duncan (SC) Byrnes
Sanders is another one who really impresses on film. In the mold of Debose, he’s just a hair down the board from the Sanford star. A great prospect, but being from Byrnes most should expect him to end up at Clemson when it’s all said and done.

Jamal Patterson (6-2, 188) McDonough (GA) Henry County
Patterson is a tough, rugged receiver who has tons of offers, and is close with OG prospect Johnnie Farms. Patterson is a guy who can be a real threat making the tough catches over the middle. With over 30 offers, he is said to have a top three of Florida, Stanford, and Clemson.

Others to watch:
Stedman Bailey (5-10, 183, 4.4) Miramar (FL) Miramar
Kenny Bell (6-1, 160) Rayville (LA) Rayville
Emory Blake (6-2, 199) Austin (TX) Stephen F. Austin
Duron Carter (6-3, 185, 4.66) Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas
Logan Heastie (6-3, 194, 4.5) Chesapeake (VA) Great Bridge
James Jackson (6-0, 175, 4.31) Grand Ledge (MI) Grand Ledge
Braxton Lane (5-10, 186, 4.4) Tyrone (GA) Sandy Creek
Xavier Rhodes (6-1, 181, 4.63) Miami (FL) Norland
Lamar Scruggs (6-2.5, 207, 4.5) Neptune Beach (FL) Fletcher
Rodney Smith (6-4.5, 201, 4.53) Miami (FL) Archbishop Carroll
Terdema Ussery (6-4, 195, 4.48) Dallas (TX) St. Mark’s

Analysis: As of now, I think the staff would like to sign a couple of smaller, shiftier guys (i.e. Debose and Richardson), and then 1-2 bigger targets. I’m going to throw Patterson and Scruggs in as well, with Scruggs also having the ability to possibly move inside to a TE/H-Back role as well.

FULLBACK / H-BACK / TIGHT END
Needs: 1-2

Orson Charles (6-2, 216, 4.6) Tampa (FL) Plant
Charles is a super-athletic TE/H-Back who is much more of a threat in the passing game, than as a blocker right now. While he doesn’t have prototypical size, his game could be compared to Purdue TE Dustin Keller who blew up recently with a huge performance at the NFL Combine, as is thought to be a late first-round/early second-round pick. Like Cornelius Ingram, Charles could line up at multiple positions in college, making him even more valuable as a football player.

Malcolm Bush (6-6, 237, 4.8) Hackensack (NJ) Hackensack
Bush is more of the typical TE that a lot of teams look for. He is well-rounded, athletic enough to be a threat in the passing game, but with a great frame that should allow him to bulk up in excess of 250 pounds, and make Bush a presence as a blocker as well. Boston College, Florida, Ohio State, and Rutgers seem to be in the best shape for Bush at the present time.

Izaan Cross (6-4, 250) Flowery Branch (GA) Flowery Branch
Cross is a versatile prospect who could play tight end, defensive end, or even move inside to defensive tackle on the next level. Florida among several schools (Clemson, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, and UCF) showing Cross a lot of attention early on.

Lamar Scruggs (6-2.5, 207, 4.5) Neptune Beach (FL) Fletcher
Scruggs has been listed as a WR, but seems to project more as a TE on the next level, IMO. He’s a big physical wideout who is already approaching double-digit offers. Plays at a Gator-friendly school which in the past, produced former Gators Ciatrick Fason and Kyle Jackson.

Others to watch:
Paul Freedman (6-5.5, 224, 4.87) Clearwater (FL) Central Catholic
Gabe Holmes (6-6, 220) Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas
Carlos Hyde (6-1, 225, 4.6) Naples (FL) Naples
Justin Jones (6-8, 240, 4.8) Conyers (GA) Heritage
Jamel Leonard (5-11, 245, 4.67) Interlachen (FL) Interlachen
Jordan Najvar (6-6, 215, 4.8) Klein (TX) Oak

Analysis: Charles is clearly the man that the staff covets. If they could land Charles, and possibly another guy who could man a WR/TE role (Lamar Scruggs, perhaps), that would be the Gators in good shape here. However, with Murray possibly heading to UGA…Florida’s chances at landing Charles look slim to none. Also look for a guy like Phillip Bailey to possibly get an offer as a LB/FB, much like T.J. Pridemore received last year.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Needs: 3-5

TACKLES
Xavier Nixon (6-5.5, 271, 5.65) Fayetteville (NC) Jack Britt
Nixon is a lean, athletic tackle prospect is highly regarded by all the major recruiting services. He has offers from all over, but Clemson, North Carolina, Georgia, Miami, and Tennessee, and Florida have to be considered the top contenders, but Nixon has been very hush-hush about his favorites up to this point.

Eric Shrive (6-7, 288, 5.1) Scranton (PA) West Scranton
The big man from Pennsylvania has around 20 offers already and is considered a top-100 type prospect. Big Ten schools, Notre Dame, and Miami (O-Line coach Stoutland has ties to the Northeast) are among the biggest contenders right now for Shrive. A spring visit to Gainesville seems to have the Gators squarely in the hunt for his signature.

Chris Freeman (6-8, 325, 5.2) Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison
Possibly the biggest lineman on board…Freeman recently made a visit to Florida for the Orange & Blue game, and Florida seems to be in a great position to land him. LSU, Ohio State, and Michigan are also among the top schools for Freeman.

Austin Long (6-5.5, 270) Memphis (TN) Briarcrest Christian
Long is another lean, athletic tackle prospect. He is a former teammate of 2008 Alabama signee Barrett Jones. Long favors the SEC, and claims to have been a Florida fan growing up. Georgia is squarely in the mix, along with Florida…but most feel Alabama is the team to beat.

INTERIOR
Nick Alajajian (6-4, 270) Naples (FL) Naples
Cornerstone for the Florida 3A champs has a lot of interest early on. Plays left tackle for Naples, but likely projects as a guard or center on the next level. Has plenty of room for growth. Displays great leg drive, and the ability to finish blocks. He has little experience pass-blocking because of the offense Naples runs, but that does not seem to be much of a concern. He has been quoted as having Florida as his leader multiple times this Spring.

Johnnie Farms (6-3, 295, 4.9) Perry (GA) Perry
Considered by some to be the top interior offensive line prospect in the state of Georgia. Favors Florida early. Shows incredible strength and leg drive. Just a brutal blocker who isn’t satisfied with anything less than a pancake. Physical attributes suggest he can contribute early on the next level. He will be considered one of the best offensive linemen in the country when it’s all said and done.

Jonathan Harrison (6-3.5, 280, 5.12) Groveland (FL) South Lake
An extremely athletic offensive line prospect out of the same high school as Jeff Demps. While he is not as highly regarded as some on this list for the time being, he is a big-time target of the Florida staff. With his athletic ability and reach, some believe he could play offensive tackle on the next level. Florida appears to be the team to beat here.

Tony Foster (6-4, 280) Valdosta (GA) Valdosta
Like Harrison, his measurables are more typical of a guard, but his athletic ability and reach suggest he could play tackle on the next level. Very high on Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Florida at this time. Attended the Orange & Blue game with his teammate, LB Mike Gilliard.

Jared Wheeler (6-5, 303, 5.1) Plantation (FL) American Heritage
Big-time OT/OG prospect out of South Florida is said to be very high on the Gators at this point. Could play tackle or guard on the next level, but his light feet tend to suggest that tackle could be his position. Good basketball player as well. Should be a Big Three battle if it draws out longer than expected.

Kamran Joyer (6-2, 316) Wesley Chapel (FL) Wesley Chapel
Class 5A second team all-state as a junior. Extremely strong (400+ bencher). Has been to Florida multiple times since National Signing Day. Currently does not hold an offer from the Gators. Tennessee is considered the main competition for his services.

Others to watch:
Mark Arcidiacono (6-4, 289) Philadelphia (PA) St. Joseph’s
Darrin Baker (6-4, 280) Tampa (FL) Hillsborough
Denzel Bonner (6-3, 275) Tallahassee (FL) Godby
Mark Brazinski (6-2.5, 285, 5.1) Somerville (NJ) Immaculata
Justin Cabbagestalk (6-3, 275) Seffner (FL) Armwood
Andrew Carter (6-5, 265, 4.8) Tallahassee (FL) Leon
Chris Faulk (6-6, 280) Sidell (LA) Northshore
Joel Gray (6-6, 288) Lewisville (TX) Hebron
Jon Halapio (6-4, 300) St. Petersburg (FL) Catholic
Andre Harris (6-3, 340) Lovejoy (GA) Lovejoy
Jeff Hartung (6-3, 295) Orange Park (FL) Ridgeview
Kyle Koehne (6-6, 300) Indianapolis (IN) Cathedral
Mike Lopez (6-5, 315) Venice (FL) Venice
John Martinez (6-2, 262, 5.22) Salt Lake City (UT) Cottonwood
Billy Nagle (6-4, 315) Venice (FL) Venice
Henry Orelus (6-3, 270, 5.17) Belle Glade (FL) Glades Central
Hunter Poole (6-5, 315, 5.23) Tallahassee (FL) Lincoln
Jordan Weingart (6-3, 290) Gainesville (FL)
Peter White (6-4, 344, 5.3) Washington (DC) St. John’s
Stephen Whitmer (6-2, 300, 5.38) Newberry (FL) Newberry

Analysis: The offense really needs to gain 4 linemen in this cycle, whether that comes from 3 signees, and a move by Patchan back to offense, or by 4 signees will be interesting to see. Personally, a class of Alajajian, Farms, Freeman, and Harrison is what appears in the crystal ball as of right now. But to be honest, there are a lot of very talented O-Linemen who are on the board, and the staff will have more difficult decisions here, than at any other position.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Needs: 2-3

Gary Brown (6-3, 275, 4.67) Quincy (FL) West Gadsden
COMMITTED TO FLORIDA
Brown is an incredible athlete on film. He is extremely blessed for a player of his size. He lines up at linebacker, fullback, defensive end, and tackle on film. He projects as a three-technique on the next level. A great interior pass-rusher with a superb first step. 26 sacks as a junior.

Dyron Dye (6-4, 217, 4.77) Sanford (FL) Seminole
Dye was impressive at the Army All-American Combine. Should be one of the top 20 prospects in the state of Florida. Plays for a program who hasn’t had a big-time recruit since Jeff Faine (who, ironically, Urban Meyer recruited to Notre Dame). Favors Florida early. It will be interesting to see if teammates Andre Debose and Ray Ray Armstrong will all stick together on the next level.

Nick Kasa (6-5.5, 249, 5.02) Broomfield (CO) Legacy
10 sacks and 16 TFL as a junior. Has reportedly been timed at 11.1 seconds in the 100m. Favors Florida early, along with USC and Colorado.

Isaac Holmes (6-3, 295) Hoboken (NJ) Hoboken
Holmes is the typical plugger at Nose Guard. A strong, wide-bodied tackle who can hold up the point of attack on the line of scrimmage. Interesting in that he was a Miami fan growing up, but has a tie to Notre Dame in cousin Duval Kamara (2007 WR signee). Florida is a dark horse here.

Quinton Dial (6-5, 295) Pinson (AL) Clay
Dial is believed to be a strong ‘Bama lean, but Florida has been in on him for a while. Big (but raw) inside prospect who can be dominant at times because of his size and athletic ability.

Ryne Giddins (6-3, 225, 4.75) Seffner (FL) Armwood
21 sacks in 14 games as a Junior. Class 4A first team all-state, and awarded Defensive POY honors for Hillsborough County by the St. Petersburg Times. Probably the top defensive player on the board for the Class of 2009. Florida, Florida State, and South Florida are the contenders here.

Demonte McCallister (6-2, 240, 4.7) Tampa (FL) Alonso
McCallister claims double-digits offers. A childhood ’Nole fan growing up. Very active, and athletic as he also plays fullback and tight end on offense. Could be a nice fit at the three-technique spot or at strong side end. A recent visit to Gainesville to take in a spring practice seemed to raise his opinion of Florida. 65 tackles and 10 sacks as a junior.

Others to watch:
Corey Adams (6-3, 272, 4.9) Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro
John Bivins (6-5, 255) West Palm Beach (FL) Dwyer
Tyrone Dixon (6-0.5, 278) Gainesville (FL) Eastside
Craig Drummond (6-5, 265) Chicago (IL) Morgan Park
Jay Finch (6-4, 255) Kennesaw (GA) Kennesaw Mountain
Shayon Green (6-2, 235, 4.7) Tifton (GA) Tift County
Josh Elizondo (6-2, 275) Naples (FL) Naples
Arthur Jeffrey (6-4, 285) Sarasota (FL) Booker
Kendall Kelly (6-5, 277) Gainesville (FL) Gainesville
Devon Kennard (6-4, 238, 4.7) Phoenix (AZ) Desert Vista
Anthony LaLota (6-6, 260) Princeton (NJ) The Hun School
Derrick Lott (6-4, 260) Kennesaw (GA) North Cobb
Antwan Lowery (6-3, 300) Miami (FL) Columbus
Xavier Melton (6-2, 268, 5.44) Lakeland (FL) George Jenkins
Dontavious Pyron (6-1, 275) Tampa (FL) Chamberlain
Deion Roberson (6-3, 275) Tucker (GA) Tucker
Luther Robinson (6-2, 270, 5.18) Ft. Pierce (FL) Westwood
Ed Stinson (6-5, 235) Homestead (FL) South Dade
Brandon Taylor (6-1, 290, 5.35) Miami (FL) Krop

Analysis: Florida is in really good shape here. With Brown already committed, and Dye believed to be close to joining the fold, the Gators may be finished shopping on the D-Line very quickly. If this scenario plays out, look for Florida to continue pursuing a select group of prospects in the event of a recruit defection, transfer, early entry to the NFL draft, and/or medical hardship.

LINEBACKER
Needs: 2-3

Ray Ray Armstrong (6-4, 218) Sanford (FL) Seminole
Armstrong is a physical specimen who looks to be a tremendous athlete on film as a QB and safety. He doesn’t play LB for Seminole High, but I project him to play the position on the next level, because of his size and tenaciousness as a defensive player. Seems to be a Big Three battle at this point, but Armstrong hasn’t tipped his hand much…other than to back-up the claims of the Sanford trio that they want to play together in college.

Jarvis Jones (6-3, 205, 4.6) Columbus (GA) Carver
Probably the #1 LB prospect in the country. Jones has it all. Size, strength, the ability to run, and most importantly-the ability to hit. Jones has the ability to play any LB position on the next level with his physical skill-set, and with continued development in college, will likely be able to fit into the 4-3 or the 3-4 in the pros. Just an amazing prospect who will be the subject of one of the most intense recruiting battles in the South this year. Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, and Clemson should be in the thick of it for Jones until he makes a decision.

Michael Gilliard (6-1, 200, 4.6) Valdosta (GA) Valdosta
Incredibly athletic WILL LB prospect the staff is very high on. He displays great athleticism on film, he is literally a player who can fly all over the place. A true play-maker at the linebacker position. Like his teammate Foster…UGA, Georgia Tech, and Florida comprise his top three.

Frankie Telfort (5-11, 194, 4.5) Miami (FL) Gulliver Prep
He‘s listed at LB, but I think it‘s entirely feasible that Telfort plays safety on the next level. Very athletic, active on presence, despite his slight frame. Florida, USC, West Virginia, Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech appear to be his favorites for now…but Mama really likes the Gators.

Carlo Calabrese (6-2, 225, 4.7) Verona (NJ) Verona
Big, thick player whose development and roots will earn him comparisons to Brendan Beal and Brian Cushing. Calabrese will be a great fit at the MIKE on the next level where his strength will be best put to use. After a recent weekend visit to Gainesville to take in a practice and the Orange & Blue game, UF appears to be very much in the hunt for Calabrese.

Jelani Jenkins (6-0, 203, 4.45) Wheaton (MD) Our Lady of Good Counsel
A good football player, and on top of that a good student-Jenkins is a playmaker all over the field at the high school level. His athletic ability doesn’t rule out a move to safety at the next level. Jenkins favors the Gators, but currently does not have an offer from UF. Virginia should be heavily involved here, along with Maryland.

Jon Bostic (6-2, 215, 4.59) Wellington (FL) Palm Beach Central
A very athletic player, who sees time as a DB for Palm Beach Central. He has been flying up the charts over the last month, and is now squarely on the radar of the Florida Gators. Attended the Orange & Blue game. He is wide open, but seems to be giving a strong look to the Gators early on.

Corico Hawkins (6-0, 218, 4.53) Milledgeville (GA) Milledgeville
A rugged linebacker, who likely projects as a MIKE on the next level. Hawkins boldly likens his game to Ray Lewis. While that may be a stretch at this point, Hawkins is definitely a force when moving forwards to make plays in the running game. Definitely a liability in coverage at this point, but he shows good closing speed on film when going to make a tackle. He needs some bulk, and some work on his explosiveness and agility, but Hawkins certainly has the tools to be a player on the next level.

Others to watch:
Philip Bailey (5-11, 225, 4.8) Daytona Beach (FL) Mainland
John-Michael Davis (6-0, 213, 4.59) Rancho Santa Margarita (CA) Santa Margarita
Quananthony Fletcher (6-1, 245, 4.9) Miami (FL) Krop
LeRon Furr (6-3, 220, 4.6) Columbus (GA) Carver
Shane Gordon (6-1, 210, 4.7) Weston (FL) Cypress Bay
Nico Johnson (6-2, 220) Andalusia (AL) Andalusia
Cody Ledford (5-11, 202, 4.7) Tallahassee (FL) North Florida Christian
Mike Marry (6-3, 205, 4.6) Largo (FL) Largo
Nigel Mitchell-Thornton (6-2.5, 219, 4.72) Stone Mountain (GA) Stepehenson
Toney Moore (6-1, 203) West Palm Beach (FL) King’s Academy
Connor O’Neill (6-1, 195) Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas
Tana Patrick (6-3, 215, 4.6) Stevenson (AL) North Jackson
Bradley Terry (6-3, 198, 4.58) Jacksonville (FL) Bolles
Phil Walker (6-1, 208, 4.50) Cypress Bay (FL) Cypress Bay

Analysis: As of now, I expect Spikes to leave early for the draft, and in response, Florida will sign 2 ‘backers in the ‘09 class. Armstrong seems like a safe bet, I believe one of the the WILL prospects (Gillard, Jenkins, Bostic) will fill out the class as well. Put me down for Bostic today…but Gilliard and Jenkins are just as reasonable. If Armstrong heads elsewhere…don’t be surprised to see the interest pick up for Phillip Bailey out of Daytona Beach.

SECONDARY
Needs: 2-3

Brandon McGee (5-11.5, 180, 4.57) Lauderhill (FL) Plantation
All-around athlete plays QB for Plantation but projects as a DB on the next level. Big-time prospect who will be a battle amongst the state programs, USC, and Ohio State. His stock has blown through the roof this Spring, and he has emerged as one of the top-50 prospects in the nation.

Tevin McCaskill (6-2, 180, 4.43) Miami (FL) Northwestern
A rangy, athletic safety who would likely fit best roaming centerfield for a college defense, although with his superb speed, many wonder if McCaskill could play corner on the next level. McCaskill’s stock is starting to heat up, but it seems this battle could come down to the first two schools which offered him-Florida and Miami.

Darren Myles (6-2, 180, 4.49) Atlanta (GA) Carver
Myles has gathered some big-time offers in recent weeks as he sold himself to big-time schools as he made the rounds on the spring practice circuit. The strategy definitely worked. Myles has a long list of suitors which includes (but is not limited to) Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Purdue, and Notre Dame, along with the Gators.

Terry Shankle (5-11, 170, 4.5) Norwood (NC) South Stanly
15 INT’s as a junior. A lot of schools jumped on the bandwagon after his film started making the rounds on the internet. He’s all over the field, but it’s hard to tell just how talented he is because of the fact he plays small-school football in North Carolina. Clemson, UNC, and Alabama are among the favorites to land him.

Travis Hawkins (5-9, 181, 4.42) Gaithersburg (MD) Quince Orchard
Hawkins is a tough, hard-nosed corner who shows great athleticism as well. He has over 15 offers, but seems most impressed by Illinois, Maryland, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Penn State, in addition to Florida in the early-going.

Michael Carter (5-11.5, 155, 4.5) Pompano Beach (FL) Ely
While he doesn’t have all the physical tools of Patrick Johnson, some say that Carter outperformed the five-star LSU signee on defense for Ely last year. Carter claims a top three of (and offers from) Florida, Miami, and Minnesota. If the Golden Gophers seem like they don’t fit in this group…it’s because they really don’t. However, Carter’s cousin Tyrone played for Minnesota, and Tim Brewster has made the younger Carter a big-tim priority. Should be a recruitment to keep an eye on.

Branden Smith (5-11, 171, 4.4) Atlanta (GA) Washington
Keep an eye on this kid. He has blown up over the course of the spring, and has his choice of schools across the Southeast. Florida is trying to get involved here in a big way.

Dre Kirkpatrick (6-2, 180, 4.4) Gadsen (AL) Gadsen City
Kirkpatrick is on the board, because he’s the top DB in the country, and lists Florida, despite the fact it would be a minor upset if he doesn’t go to Alabama. A great, rangy corner who will earn comparisons to Antonio Cromartie because of his frame. He could also potentially play FS on the next level as well.

Corey Addison (6-2, 190, 4.45) Jacksonville (FL) Jackson
A’Kevis Anderson (5-10, 190) Hallandale (FL) Hallandale
Otis Brown, Jr. (5-9, 170, 4.47) Gainesville (FL) Gainesville
Dominic Clarke (5-9, 170, 4.43) Frederick (MD) Tuscacora
Ricardo Dixon (5-10, 164, 4.64) Hallandale (FL) Hallandale
Sean Evans (5-11, 163, 4.55) Fort Walton Beach (FL) Fort Walton Beach
Angelo Hadley (5-11, 190, 4.5) Seffner (FL) Armwood
Willie Hickman (5-9, 155, 4.45) Pahokee (FL) Pahokee
Larvez Mars (5-9, 190) Apopka (FL) Apopka
Keith Reaser (5-10, 160, 4.5) Miami (FL) Killian
Josh Robinson (5-10, 178, 4.45) Lauderhill (FL) Plantation
Jamaal Simpson (5-9, 170, 4.5) Dade City (FL) Pasco
Jonathan Scott (6-3, 190) Daytona Beach (FL) Seabreeze
Jawanza Starling (6-2, 195, 4.55) Tallahassee (FL) Lincoln
David Van Dyke (6-0, 170) Monsignor (FL) Pace
Jansen Watson (5-10, 180, 4.5) Kissimmee (FL) Osceola
Kayvon Webster (5-11, 181, 4.5) Opa Locka (FL) Monsignor Pace
Austin Williams (5-11, 175) Jacksonville (FL) First Coast
Juarez Wynn (5-11, 175, 4.5) Saint Petersburg (FL) Northeast

Analysis: Just the same as the defensive line, Florida is in great shape in the defensive backfield. I really only expect to see another corner in this class in addition to Reid, another corner, and possibly a safety if we see the numbers dwindle there. Addison, Hadley, McCaskill, Myles, Telfort, and Watson seem to be the best bets there.

ATHLTE

Greg Reid (5-9, 170, 4.4) Valdosta (GA) Lowdnes
COMMITTED TO FLORIDA
Reid is an fine-looking prospect who could potentially see time as a running back, wide receiver, return specialist, but more likely-at corner. 18 career INT’s, he isn’t the biggest player, but an enormously talented player who does not lack confidence, and seems to have all the qualities you look for in a leader on the football field.

Matt Coffee (5-11, 210, 4.55) Fort Walton Beach (FL) Choctaw
Brother Glen is a scholarship RB at the University of Alabama. Matt projects as a big RB, or possibly an OLB on the next level. Coffee seems to be wide-open at this point, but ‘Bama, Florida State, and Florida are definitely among the early leaders for Coffee.

Jonathan Davis (5-9, 205, 4.5) Tucker (GA) Tucker
Davis isn’t the biggest player on the field, but can have a huge impact nonetheless. Sees some spot duty at RB on offense, and certainly has the thick build to be an impact player at the position. Most feel he could be a great safety or more likely a Buster Davis-type linebacker on defense. Fast, instinctive, and hits like a Mack Truck. Will be a great pick-up for someone.

Jeremy Gallon (5-9, 170) Apopka (FL) Apopka
Signal-caller led Apopka deep into the 6A playoffs. Projects as a slot player, or possibly a corner on the next level. 1,071 ad 8 TD’s passing to go with 1,613 yards and 23 TD’s on the ground for Gallon in ‘07. Seems to be wide-open, in terms of interest at this point.

Stephon Gilmore (6-1, 180, 4.4) Rock Hill (SC) South Pointe
Gilmore primarily plays QB for South Point, but it’s believed that he projects as a safety on the next level, although I have him down as an athlete. He is dangerous with the ball in his hands, and I could see a school like West Virginia putting the full-court press on him as a QB, while there are other programs who would probably love to play Gilmore as a WR. Clemson is reported the early leader for Gilmore.

Others to watch:
Deschion Baskerville (5-8, 175) Neptune Beach (FL) Fletcher
Mywan Jackson (5-11. 170, 4.52) Seffner (FL) Armwood

Antonio Miles (5-11, 190) Altamonte Springs (FL) Lake Brantley
Jamal Reid (6-1, 175) Mayo (FL) Lafayette
Denard Robinson (6-0, 191, 4.53) Deerfield Beach (FL) Deerfield Beach
Donovan Tate (6-2, 190, 4.5) Cartersville (GA) Cartersville
