The Gators are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 16 at No. 1 South Carolina.
ATHENS, Ga. - Florida women's basketball was unable to keep pace with Georgia on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Bulldogs in Athens, 81-55.
KK Deans led the Gators (14-11, 3-9 SEC) with 13 points, with all four made field goals coming from behind the arc, and was the only Florida athlete in double figures. Ra Shaya Kyle made her presence felt in the post, tallying nine points and eight rebounds.
Florida was unable to put an end to the cold shooting, ending the game 17-of-52 (32.7%) from the floor and 6-of-22 (27.3%) from long range. At the free throw line, the Gators shot 15-of-19 (78.9%). The Bulldogs (17-9, 6-6 SEC) ended their afternoon 36-of-78 (46.2%) from the field and 1-of-7 (14.3) from three-point range.
On the glass, Georgia held a 45-33 advantage, including a 22-11 edge on the offensive boards. Kyle led the way for the Gators with eight rebounds, while Tatyana Wyche pulled-down five of her own and Nina Rickards ended with four.
Defensively, Florida swiped eight steals with a trio of athletes recording two, while forcing 16 turnovers. The Bulldogs, however, forced 28 UF turnovers that resulted in 17 steals and a 28-16 lead in points off turnovers.
Neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm early with Kyle connecting on a hook shot with 7:55 left in the opening frame to give Florida the first lead of the game. The Bulldogs responded with the next six before Alberte Rimdal knocked-down a triple to make it 6-5 heading into the media timeout. Florida was able to hold Georgia to just a 3-of-14 start from the field, but the Bulldogs converted on their last six shots from the field to take an 18-8 advantage into the second quarter.
Georgia opened-up a 14-point advantage at the 6:54 mark of the second quarter behind four-straight jumpers. The Orange & Blue wouldn't go away, however, getting three-consecutive layups from Kyle, Jeriah Warren and Leilani Correa to pull within eight, 29-21. An 8-2 response from the opposition extended the lead to 14 once again prior to Georgia taking a 39-28 lead into halftime.
An 8-0 run midway through the third frame gave UGA their biggest lead of the quarter, 53-32, with 4:32 remaining. An 8-1 response from Florida, with four coming from Kyle, pulled the Gators back within 14 three minutes later, but that's as close as the Orange & Blue would get, falling 81-55 in the end.
