UF Softball & Baseball

Just to give some comparisons for the Gainesville Softball Regional:
UF 43-16, RPI #13, SOS #13
Canisius 32-16, RPI #121, SOS #236
Georgia Tech 37-16, RPI #23, SOS #27
Wisconsin 28-19, RPI #39, SOS #42

The Canisius Golden Griffins are located in Buffalo, NY. They are part of the Metro Athletic Conference. They won their conference and their conference tournament and are on a 12-game winning streak entering the NCAA tournament. They are a team like Florida, with little power and a lot of speed. Team batting average is ,292, only 16 home runs on the year, but 107-128 in stolen bases. They have a .965 fielding percentage and a team ERA of 2.68. Their #1 pitcher is a redshirt sophomore who is 14-8 with a 1.58 ERA. She's thrown 150 innings with 177 K's and a batting average against of .186.
Georgia Tech finished 6th in the ACC. They have a team batting average of .284, a slugging percentage of .421, with only 35 home runs. They have 1 starter hitting .401, another at .364 and a third at .337. All their other primary players hit .280 or less. They have 244 walks and 257 strikeouts, are 63-75 in stolen bases and field at .974. Team ERA is 2.74. Their 2 primary pitchers are both juniors. Blake Neleman is 14-8 with a 2.24 ERA, 171.2 innings, 83 walks, 204 K's and a .198 batting average against. Chandler Dennis is 16-6 with a 2.84 ERA, 128 innings pitched, 61 walks, 106 K's and a .228 batting average against.
Wisconsin finished 8th in the Big 10. They have a team batting average of .259 with their top 3 hitters batting .377, .342 and .318, a slugging percentage of .398 and only 29 home runs. They have 168 walks and 320 strikeouts, 42-60 in stolen bases and a fielding percentage of .960. Their team ERA is 2.91 and they rely primarily on ace Maddie Schwartz in the circle. She is 23-11 with a 2.41 ERA, 200 innings pitched, 47 walks, 122 K's and a ,253 batting average against.
Florida finished in a 3 way tie for 4th place in the SEC. They have a team batting average of .308, a slugging percentage of .442 with 33 home runs. We have 6 starters hitting over .300, 193 walks and 239 K's, 123-137 in stolen bases, with a fielding percentage of .980. Team ERA is 2.39. The staff has given up 185 walks with 336 K's in 397.2 innings, with a team batting average against of .206. Elizabeth Hightower is the primary pitcher. She's 16-7 with a 2.32 ERA Trlicek is at 1.84, Lugo at 2.22 and Delbrey 2.30), 156.2 innings pitched with 64 walks, 128 K's and a .213 batting average against. Delbrey BA against is only .159, Lugo's .206 and Trlicek's .248.

Paco, if we keep going, maybe we can get rid of all of our coaches, That would certainly make some of our fans who appear to be convinced they can do a better job, happy. I have been around a long time and I have never seen a coach pinch hit and get a hit. Or one play short stop. We expect way too much my friend, way too much. JMO.....jim

So, pointing out problems is wrong? There's a difference between detailing the obvious and making demands. Nobody is making demands here, much less demands of who the coach is.

There is a thing called constructive criticism and most posts here are more in line with that rather than being anything else.

Yeah, Baby, Yeah!!! Sterlin Thompson slugged a walk off 2-out, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to give UF baseball a 7-5 win over FSU. The Gators had not gotten a hit since the 3rd inning until Wyatt Langford got a 2 out single in the bottom of the 9th. FSU changed pitchers to bring in a lefty to face Thompson, but he drilled a hanging slider out of the park for the win. Florida scored first on a solo HR by Langford in the bottom of the first, but starting pitcher Nic Ficarrotta got rocked for 3 runs in the 2nd. The Gators took back the lead in the bottom of the 3rd. It started with another solo HR by Langford. Thompson was HBP and Josh Rivera drew a 2-out walk. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and then Jac Caglionone drove them home with a single. Ty Evans then tripled to give the Gators a 5-3 lead. But in the top of the 4th, FSU tied the game after Fisher Jameson gave up a walk and single. Reliever Blake Purnell threw a wild pitch to allow 1 run to score and then gave up a game tying single. Neither team really threatened after that until the bottom of the 9th, as Tyler Nesbitt shut down FSU for 3.1 innings and Ryan Slater got the last 2 outs in the 9th to get the win. Florida goes to 33-19, as they head to the final series of the season, hosting South Carolina Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
A couple of observations aside from Langford and Thompson continuing to shine for the Gators. Jac Caglionone & Ty Evans add pop and competitiveness to the lineup, while Jud Fabian continues in a massive slump, 1-30 in his last 7 games. Mac Guscette struggled both at the plate and behind it and it seems going forward B.T. Riopelle will be the catcher, with Kris Armstrong getting the first shot to take over at first base for the rest of the season.

Great season by these kids and by Sully. Has not been easy. This lineup has 4 guys who hit as well as anyone we have had. And looks like Sully has figured out who on the pitching staff he can trust.

Until the Holes win it all in Omaha, they must always bow their heads in shame to us as THE superior program.

We have somwthing they have worked very hard for and never achieved. And we got it first. Every seaso that passes that the Holes don’t win in Omaha just adds to their shame.

Yeah FSU is a great baseball program. I’ll take a program that has been to the postseason 29 straight years or whatever. It’s hard to get to Omaha and harder to win there. Gators probably took the best team to Omaha three times and got one. Maybe we’ll steal one this year. 😉

I will admit that I'm a little sad that I can't see much nole saltiness on message boards anymore unless I pay.

If I have to pay noles to see their saltiness then it's a double-edged sword.

Actually FSU has been to the NCAA tournament 58 times and 43 in a row. The have been to the CWS 23 times without winning with a .387 winning percentage, making the finals only 3 times and losing them all. Clemson is 2nd with 12 appearances in the CWS without a championship.

We're the better team, but this is still the SEC where you have to be focused and make every bat and every pitch count.

This lineup is special. Three guys who hit as good as anyone we’ve seen. Jud Fabe, who is an early mlb pick. Cags, who is an animal. And the rest are solid SEC bats. Langford looks like Mike Trout.

UF baseball improved to 34-19, 14-14 by winning the opening game of the series with South Carolina 14-5 behind an offensive barrage that saw every Gator get at least 1 hit, 16 for the team to go with 7 walks. Wyatt Langford hit 2 more home runs, including one to lead off the bottom of the first, to give him 21 on the season. Colby Halter went 3-5 with an RBI, Ty Evans went 2-4 with a HR and 4 RBI, Jac Caglionone went 2-5 with a HR and 3 RBI, Kris Armstrong with 1-2 with 2 RBI, B.T. Riopelle went 2-4 with 3 runs scored, Sterling Thompson went 2-4 with an RBI and Jud Fabian went 1-3 with an RBI. On the mound, Brandon Sproat got the win, going 6.1 innings, giving up 4 runs (2 earned), on 4 hits, 3 walks, 3 HBP and 3 K's. Phillips Abner got the 1 out he was brought in to get, Blake Purnell went 1.1 innings, only giving up a walk, and Anthony Ursitti pitched the 9th and gave up a solo HR with 2 K's. With Vanderbilt and Georgia both losing tonight, the Gators move into a 3 way tie for 2nd place in the SEC East and a 3-way tie for 6th place in the overall SEC standings. Plus, with FSU losing to North Carolina 7-5 on a 3-run walk off HR in the bottom of the 9th, Florida is positioning themselves for consideration as a Regional host. The problem could be weather, as the Friday and Saturday games are in jeopardy due to thunderstorm predictions.

I have more respect for the FSU baseball program now than I did back in the day, when they would pile up 60 wins a year in the Metro conference. But the ACC is a respectable if not elite conference, and they have continued to be a strong program.

(But I do very much like the fact they haven't won one, and we have).

With the relief pitching and hitting coming together it’s a shame Hunter Barco had to shut it down. This team could be dangerous.

They could really mess up a higher seed's season. Bullpen is still suspect and inconsistent, but pitching better of late.

The lineup is as good as anyone. No three better hitters anywhere than Langford, Thompson and Riopelle.

I’m happy to have Riopelle at bat in any situation.
1 out, runners on 1st and 2nd just a minute ago and he struck out on a ball in the dirt. That's his 63rd of the year. I agree that he's been a great addition with some key hit and a good BA, plus an excellent catcher. But way too many K's, especially with runners on base and from the clean-up slot.

UF softball won their opening game of the NCAA tournament, beating the Canisius Golden Griffin 10-1 in 5 innings. They will play Georgia Tech, who beat Wisconsin 2-1, in the winner's bracket game Saturday, weather permitting. Lexie Delbrey pitched 3 complete innings, striking out 7, but she walked 4, hit 1 and only gave up 1 hit, being relieved by Rylee Trlicek with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 4th with the Gators up 8-0. Trlicek made a throwing error on a comebacker trying to get a force out, allowing an unearned run to score, but she got a line drive out and two K's to end the inning. There was a lightning delay and the Gators added 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th and Natalie Lugo pitched the 5th to close out the run rule game. Florida's offense was led by Skylar Wallace, 3-3, HR stolen base and 3 runs scored; Sam Rose, 1-2 with a 3-run HR; Kendra Falby, 2-3 with a run scored; Reagan Walsh, 2-3 with an RBI, Cheyenne Lindsey, 1-3 with 2 RBI, and Charla Echols, 1-2 with a sac fly and 2 RBI. Nice, decisive win for the Gators.

He hit over .500 over the two weeks we reclaimed our season and was SEC player of the week. He’s been one of the hottest bats in the country second half of the year. What are you bitching about? You’ve seen baseball before yes? You know the best players make outs 60-70 percent of the time yea?

You just see with this lineup, it’s not even about the individual hitters doing damage, which they are, but they are just collectively grinding on pitchers. Dude tonight only gave up 1 run through 3 innings but threw 70 pitches. Over the course of a series, we just eat up the bullpen. Plus they’re aggressive on the bases. I heard the other night they were like 48-51 stealing bases or something absurd. And they are always trying to take bases on pitches in the dirt etc…. So this is classic Sully.

Not bitching. Just pointing out facts. He's been an excellent addition to the team and a very valuable Gator, but simply strikes out too much. 3rd most K's in the SEC. That's a fact that can't be disputed.

Gator baseball improved to 35-19, 15-14 in the SEC with a dominating 8-0 win over South Carolina. Brandon Neely threw his best baseball of the year, going 7 innings, throwing 96 pitches, only giving up 3 hits, no walks and 10 strikeouts. Blake Purnell and Anthony Ursitti pitched an inning each in closing out the game. 2 SC errors in the 3rd helped the Gators jump out to a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning and they added 2 more in the 5th, 2 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th to put the game away. Florida had 10 hits and 6 walks on the night, led by Jud Fabian's 3-4, with a HR, double 2 RBI, a stolen base and 2 runs scored. Sterlin Thompson went 2-4 with an RBI, Josh Rivera hit a 2-run HR and Jac Caglionone and Deric Fabian each had a hit and RBI. Ty Evans was hit on the hand/wrist by a pitch in the 3rd inning and was replaced by Deric Fabian in the 4th, who went to 2nd base and Thompson to RF, with Halter staying at 3rd. Hopefully, nothing serious, as Evans has been good since being inserted in to the lineup. The Gators go for the sweep Saturday afternoon, weather permitting, with Nick Pogue on the mound.

We're 46-62 in stolen bases, 8th most SB in the SEC. Our guys are fairly aggressive on the base paths, sometimes to their own detriment. Langford got picked off 1st last night and tonight and Thompson got picked off 3rd tonight with nobody out. Those mistakes could get you beat in a tight game. There is no doubt we're playing our best ball of the season, winning 12 of 14 since getting swept by Tennessee. And we could be dangerous in the post season. But let's not get carried away here. The back end of our conference schedule has been against the bottom part of the league and we've beaten them like the better team should. But the best we could do is finish 6th in the SEC and we haven't been ranked in the Top 25 in a long time. It's possible we get selected as a Regional host and that would be great. I'm just trying to keep things real and not get carried away with super optimism based on the last 4 weeks compared to the entire 54 games played so far. I'm pulling for them as much as anyone, have followed Gator baseball for a long, long time and love it. We'll see how it all plays out and I truly hope they make a deep run in the NCAA tournament, especially when a couple of weeks ago it looked like we wouldn't even make it to the NCAA tournament.

No doubt we are playing our best baseball now. The schedule has softened a bit which helped. But every night is a grind in the SEC, no easy games. Would love to see a deep tourney run and then sneak into a 16 seed.

Gamecock starting pitcher today, Will Sanders, is a 6'6" 215 lb. righty with a 7-3 record and 3.76 ERA. In 81.1 innings he's given up 80 hits and 26 walks with 78 K's and 14 HR's. Hope our guys can make him work like they did their starter last night, but Sanders has been their best pitcher this year.
The Gator starting lineup is the same as yesterday, so it appears Ty Evans is OK. Nick Pogue on the mound.

Good to hear that Evans is ok.

The Gator baseball team ended the regular season 35-20, 15-15 in the SEC (tied for 6th with Georgia, meaning we get the #7 seed in the SEC tournament) after a lackluster 5-1 loss to South Carolina. Nick Pogue was OK in his start today, going 5.1 innings and being charged with all 4 runs on 7 hits with 6 K's. 2 of those runs came on 2 solo HR's by their DH, both with 2 outs. There was a 2 1/2 rain delay with 1 out and 1 on for SC in the top of the 7th and when play resumed Blake Purnell was on the mound. He proceeded to give up a hit & run single on the first pitch and then a squeeze bunt RBI that 1st baseman BT Riopelle couldn't handle. Sterlin Thompson made a great catch on a looper over 2nd base and then threw back to the bag for a double play to end the inning. As he's done so many times this year, Purnell manages to give up hits that allow other pitcher's runner to score without hurting his own ERA. But that extra run wouldn't have mattered because Gator bats were dead today. SC used their #1 pitcher for only the first inning, choosing to rest him for the SEC tournament. But against a bullpen that has an ERA of over 9.00, Florida only managed 3 hits to go with 8 walks, unable to get clutch hits all day while leaving 10 stranded. It seems that Florida will play South Carolina in a single elimination opening game on Tuesday and if we win that game will play #2 seed Texas A&M on Wednesday in the first game of the double elimination portion of the tournament. If we had won today, our opponent would have been Alabama and then if we had beaten them would have faced LSU in the double elimination portion. It is what it is and while the Gators still have an outside chance at hosting a Regional, their chances were hurt today and probably means they need to win at least 2 games in Hoover. Just my opinion.

Gator softball won their 45th game of the season in a game that ended 6 1/2 hours after it started with a 7-1 win over Georgia Tech. Elizabeth Hightower pitched 5 innings and gave up 1 run on 2 hits, 3 walks and 1 K. Rylee Trlicek threw an inning, giving up 2 hits and a walk with a strikeout and Natalie Lugo got the final 3 outs, hitting a batter and getting 2 K's. The Gators scored 2 runs in the first on a 2 out 2 run double from Reagan Walsh, who drove in their 3rd run of the game with a 2 out single in the 3rd. After a 2 1/2 hour weather delay the Gators got 2 more in the 6th when Kendra Falby got a 2 out single, followed by a Hannah Adams single. When Adams stole 2nd, Falby scored on a throwing error, then Skylar Wallace drove in Adams with a single. Florida got 2 more in the 6th when Walsh Walked, followed by singles from Cheyenne Lindsey & Katie Kistler. Emily Wilkie got a sac fly to drive in a run and Falby drove in the final Gator run with a single. The Gators outhit Tech 10-4 and played errorless ball.
They will play whoever comes out of the loser's bracket sometime Sunday, only needing to win once to advance to next weekend's Super Regionals.

Florida softball improved to 46-16 by destroying Wisconsin in the Regional finals 11-0 in 5 inning. The Gators outscored their 3 opponents this weekend 28-2 and are awaiting the winner of the Virginia Tech/Kentucky finals to see who they play in the Supers. If Kentucky wins, the Gators host; if VT wins the Gators travel to Blacksburg. Today Florida jumped on the Badgers, who had come from behind to knock out Georgia Tech 7-6, for 10 runs in the top of the first inning, scoring 7 runners before making an out. Florida had 15 hits in the game, led by Hannah Adams 4-4, Skylar Wallace 2-4, 3 RBI, Charla Echols 2-4, 2 RBI, Katie Kistler 1-2, 2 RBI and Reagan Walsh 1-3, 2 RBI. Lexie Delbrey (15-3) threw 4 innings, giving up 3 hits and a walk with 1 K's. Natalie Lugo pitched the 5th to complete the shutout.
