How about a thread on the pre-season #5/6 Gator softball team and the pre-season #6 Gator baseball team? Softball opens in a few minutes in Tampa vs. Illinois St. Games Saturday against Kansas City and #13/16 Michigan, then Sunday vs. USF. Baseball opens next weekend with a home series vs. Liberty.

UF softball had a fairly lackluster opening win over 0-3 Illinois State, winning 3-0. 5th year senior Natalie Lugo pitched 3.1 innings, Elizabeth Hightower threw 2.2 and freshman Lexie Delbrey, #7 recruit in the nation, pitched a perfect 7th, . RF soph Avery Goelz had a RBI triple in the 2nd, freshman LF Kendra Falby had RBI singles in the 2nd and 6th to account for the Gator runs.

Good thread idea. Liberty is actually pretty decent and will be a good first matchup for Gators.

Gator softball won their first game Saturday over the Kansas City Roos 7-1. Freshman Kendra Falby hit a 2-run HR in the 2nd, freshman C Sam Roe, the highest rated national recruit in the 2022 class, hit a solo HR in the 4th and added a sac. bunt RBI in the 6th, and the Gators got RBI triples from Cheyenne Lindsey and Hannah Adams. On the mound Elizabeth Hightower threw 5.2 innings for the win, while freshman Lexie Delbrey got the batter out she was brough in to retire and Grad Transfer Marissa Mesiemore threw a perfect 7th.

In her 1st career start, freshman Lexie Delbrey threw a complete game 1-hitter in beating #13 Michigan 4-0. The only runs scored in the game came in the top of the 6th when Cheyenne Lindsey slugged a 2-out grand slam HR. Delbrey struck out 5, walked 2 and hit 1 in showing why she was such a highly touted recruit. Gators are now 3-0 and they close out the weekend against USF at noon Sunday. That game is on ESPN+.

Seems like the softball team has a lot of freshman.
We have 5 freshmen and all of them are really good. Delbrey grew up in the same area as Kelly Barnhill near Atlanta, had some of the same coaches and has dreamed of being a Gator. OF Kendra Falby graduated from a high school in Florida, but started for the Canadian 19U National team and is the fastest player we've had since Michelle Moultrie. Catcher Sam Roe, was the #1 rated recruit in the nation, committed to Florida as an 8th grader, I think. She's only been on campus 5-6 weeks. Reagan Walsh has power to all fields and was plugged in at SS and clean-up hitter right off the bat. The only freshman who hasn't played yet is Cali Decker, from the Orlando area. She was 1st team 7A All state her junior and senior years, plus a HS All American in 2021 and a Top 25 recruit. She's primarily a catcher, but can hit. However she cut her hand not too long after getting on campus and missed fall practice. I think she's healed, but has some catching up to do. This was a great recruiting class, but we've got even better ones coming in the next 2 years.

I have a question. Who are the Kansas City Roos? Is that a college? I’ve honestly never heard of them.

Great info! Thanks.

UF blew out USF 12-0 Sunday, as the Bulls used 6 different pitchers but not their ace. Florida got 12 hits and 8 walks, scored 6 runs in the 2nd, 1 in the 4th and 5 in the 7th, as just about all the ladies got in the game. Elizabeth Hightower improved to 3-0, giving up 1 hit in 4 innings, while Rylee Trilcek threw the last 3 innings, allowing only 2 singles. 10 Gators got 1 hit, with Skylar Wallace getting 2. Florida finished the weekend 4-0, outscoring their opponents 26-1, committing no errors. Next up is JAcksonville away on Tuesday at 6 pm, then Jacksonville at home Wednesday at 6 pm.

UF/Jax softball game at 6 pm is on YouTube, not YouTubeTV, regular YouTube. I'll be getting it via my Roku box. Gators moved up to #3 after opening weekend.

Good updates Ocala. Liberty is really good. Love having a tough opening weekend opponent. We have a very young pitching staff so they need to see good comp early.

UF softball just beat JU in Jax 13-1 in a 5 inning run rule. Natalie Lugo threw 4 innings of shutout ball, freshman SS Reagan Walsh hit a grand slam and soph. RF Avery Goelz hit a 2-run HR.
They play again Wed. at 6 pm in G'ville on SEC+.

After tonight's "practice" game against JU (29-20 last year, but lost 11 players off that team and is bad this year), the #3 Gators host #12 Duke Friday at 6 pm, then Villanova (2-3 right now) Saturday at 11:30 am and Louisville (4-1) Saturday at 2:00 pm, then Florida A&M (1-3) Sunday at 2 pm. Duke will be a test and Louisville is usually competitive.

UF softball goes to 6-0 with an 8-0 6-inning run rule win over Jax. Freshman Lexie Delbrey pitched the first 5 innings, Elizabeth Hightower threw the 6th innings, as JU only got 3 hits and struck out 11 times. The Gators had 8 hits, 3 RBI from Skylar Wallace. Freshman speedster, now batting leadoff, had a hit, 2 stolen bases and scored 3 runs. Next game is a big one vs. #10/12 Duke Friday night at 6 pm.

Baseball starters announced for this weekend - all lefties. Hunter Barco Friday, Timmy Manning Saturday & Pierce Coppola Sunday.

We will see, but feels like we will need to produce 7+ runs each game to win. Pitching looks questionable.

Gator softball thumped #12 Duke 9-3, getting a HR and 4 RBI from Skylar Wallace, 2 hits and 2 RBI from Cheyenne Lindsay, a hit and 2 RBI from Charla Echols and 2 hits, including a triple, from Kendra Falby. Lexie Delbrey pitched the 1st inning for the Gators and was wild. She hit a batter, walked a batter, had 3 wild pitches, then gave up a 2-run double, putting the Gators behind 2-0. But Elizabeth Hightower only gave up 2 hits and a run the rest of the game as the Gators coasted after taking the lead in the bottom of the 1st.

The baseball team got a great start from Hunter Barco (6 innings, 1 hit and 11 K's), a solo HR from Wyatt Langford, plus 2 HR's from Sterlin Thompson, including a grand slam, as they won their opener vs. Liberty 7-2.

Good win for both programs. Would be nice to take 2 of 3 from Liberty, they are that good. Softball looks to be a solid top 10 program. But it's early.

UF softball just went to 8-0 with a 4-0 win over Villanova (2-6) in the first ever meeting between the two schools. Natalie Lugo threw a 2-hit shutout, striking out 5. The Gators got 2 runs in the 1st on a double steal in which Kendra Falby stole home as Hannah Adams was thrown out at 2nd, followed by an RBI single from Charla Echols. They scored their final 2 runs on a 2-out, 2-run error that allowed Adams & Wallace to score.
Gator next play Louisville at about 2 pm.

UF softball goes to 9-0 with a 9-1 6 inning run rule win over Louisville. Lexie Delbrey was erratic, walking 5 and striking out 8, with 2 wild pitches, but only giving up 2 hits. Louisville came into the game 6-1. Gators scored a run in the bottom of the 1st, 3 in the 3 and walked it off with 5 in the bottom of the 6th. Kendra Falby & Hannah Adams had 3 hits each, while Avery Goelz and Katie Kistler had 2 each. Next up is FAMU at 2 pm Sunday.

Baseball team looked pretty bad today in losing to Liberty 6-4. They went 6-33 at the plate and didn't get a hit after a single in the 5th. They had several opportunities with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs and couldn't deliver. But the most disappointing part was the pitching. 5 pitchers only gave up 6 hits and had 11 K's, but they hit 6 batters and walked 6 more. Rubber game in the series is Sunday at noon.

No surprise. Liberty is a very good and experienced team. Would be nice to get the rubber game tomorrow, but no need to hit the panic button if Liberty beats us.

Looks like we dropped the rubber game to Liberty. Need the bats to pick up. Very solid competition for an opening weekend. Hopefully the young guys can continue to develop through the season.

Except for Hunter Barco Friday night, Liberty's pitchers were better than ours, their defense was better than ours and they hit it better than we did. For this weekend Liberty was the better team. Gators have a lot to do, but they were overrated beginning the season in the Top 10. Too many unanswered questions. Way too early to panic, as it's a very long season.

Next up is at Stetson Tuesday night at 6:30 and then home vs. UNF Wednesday at 7 pm.

UF softball improved to 10-0 with an 8-0, 5 inning run rule win over Florida A&M. Rylee Trlicek got her first win of the season, allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings of work. Marissa Mesiemore threw a perfect 5th inning. Charla Echols hit her first HR of the season and had 3 RBI, freshman star Kendra Falby went 3-4 with 2 RBI as the Gators cruised.

Next up is a home & home with UNF Tuesday & Wednesday, both games at 6 pm.

Sat and Sun we gave up lots of walks and hit batters. That to me is a symptom of youth. Liberty is a very tenured team. But I agree that 9 was too high and we will drop several spots after this weekend. Sully is one of the best out there and he will get it figured out.

After the weekend, we're batting .186 with 31 K's and an on base percentage of .295. Only 4 Gators are hitting over .200 - Riopelle at .400 (with only 5 AB), Thompson at .333, Langford at .273 and Halter at .231.
From the pitching side, the team ERA is 4.33, Liberty only hit for a .216 average, but we walked 15, hit 7 and had 2 wild pitches.

On the softball side, after 10 games, the team batting average is .356 with a .454 on base percentage, with 68 RBI, 40 walks, 11 HBP and only 26 K's. We have 7 girls hitting over .300 - Falby at .548, Adams at .433, Lindsey at .367, Wallace at .357, Goelz at .333, Walsh & Wilkie at .300.
On the pitching side, the team ERA is 0.55, with opponents only hitting .127, 23 walks, 59 K's.

Just an FYI on the Gator softball home & home with UNF this week. UNF is 8-1, including a doubleheader win over Michigan State yesterday. Their only loss was 6-5 in 9 innings to N.C. State.

Should be a good challenge

Some genius here said that maybe the girls B-Ball coach should replace Mike.

Following that same train of logic, should Walton replace O'Sul???

(sarcastic & rhetorical, so don't bother...) 😉

UHHHH!!! The difference is Sully has taken UF to the CWS on numerous occasions, with two appearances in the finals, winning in 2017. So tell us how many times has Mike White taken the hoops team to the Final Four? White had one good season in 2017 with mostly Billy Donovan's players. Even great coaches struggle, just not like Mike White who has struggled 6 out of his 7 seasons.
