It was suggested that we let the "2021-22 Basketball Primer" thread die and start a new one. Here goes:

With the players already on the team and not knowing if players are returning or not (i.e Collin Castleton - C, Duruji - PF, Jones-SG and Appleby-PG(transferring out)), here is my projection of next year's team which includes the incoming freshman recruits:

=====================================================================
PG: 6'4 175 Denzel Aberdeen(Fr)

SG: 6'5 206 Niels Lane(Jr)/ 6'4 185 Elijah Kennedy(So)

SF: 6'6 180 Kowacie Reeves(So)

PF: 6'9 172 Tuo. Gakek/ 6'7" 230 CJ Felder

C: 6'9 230 Jalen Reed(Fr)/ 6'11 305 Jason Jitoboh

Total: 8 players
5 or more available for returnees & portal transfers.
=======================================================================
Of all the players that had played last season under Mike White, Reeves(15.5 mpg) & Lane(15.2 mpg) had played the most minutes followed by Felder(12.1 mpg) & Jitoboh(10.7 mpg). A lot of inexperience returns that were mostly bench players.

It will be a huge task for Golden just to field a competitive, SEC starting unit.

====================================================================================
Positions needed:
A starting-PG and/or a combo-G from the transfer portal.

If Castleton(16.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg) & Duruji(8.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg) return then that would be HUGE and may eliminate the need for another Center & PF; although, you can never have enough talent in the front-court.

Can Florida/Golden reel back in-state 5*/#3C Malik Reneau into the basketball program? That is a big question!

Florida could also use another 3-point specalist from the wings if Myreon Jones(8.2 ppg; 62/193 from 3-pt-range) elects not to return.

There are still some ESPN-Top 100 high school players available including three Floridians:

#11 6'7 210 SF Julian Phillips

#21 6'8 215 C Malik Reneau Hialeh Gardens, FL

#25 6'2 185 SG Sky Clark

#37 6'6 225 PF Eric Daley Palmetto, FL

#43 6'6 185 SF Tyrell Ward

#50 7'0 190 C Adrame Dionge

#65 6'2 170 PG Amarr Knox

#85 6'5 175 SF Riley Kugel Orlando,FL (same school as UF recruit Denzel Aberdeen)

Appleby can go. He couldn't hit the side of a barn in many of our big games.

Castleton didn't do anything I think to really improve his status and would go undrafted I think. When you are a skinny big man like him the NBA now expects you to have a 3 point shot which he doesn't have. Not sure if he should go overseas or return and try and really bulk up. I guess he could be an NBA free agent but he might be cut early trying that.

We need a true PG. Not sure what CC will do, but he can't hurt his draft stock by coming back as I don't think he would get drafted this june anyways.

sadgator knows it was used as a goof on our basketball program for years with Billy…but does anybody else find it incredibly ironic that Golden actual does look exactly like Eddie Munster? It is weird…

Gatkek entered the portal?? Where's Insta to tell us that now the program will be set back for years to come....hate losing a generational player like that.
Not surprised. Not an SEC caliber player to be fair

And as to the country bumpkin, among others mouthing off, there's this from SI...

"The 6'9", 172-pound piece rotational player produced valuably at points for the Gators in his one year with the team. Specifically, during center Colin Castelton's multi-game absence in the middle of the season due to a shoulder injury."

Gaktkek averaged 1.7 points, 1.8 rebounds, 0.8 blocks and shot nearly 50% from the field in 21 games, averaging 7.8 Min/Gm

"Showcasing length, a knack to protect the rim and the ability to play bigger than he is on the interior, Gatkek will be an intriguing option for teams looking to supply depth at the forward position."

And all that the iG said about him was that I thought he could supply some quality minutes (not just mope -up time) during the games, which is exactly what he did.
😜

PG Tyree Appleby - 34 Gms - 27.4 Min/Gm,
FG 36.4%, 3's 34.2%, FT 84.8%, 10.9 Pts/Gm, 2.1 Rb, 3.7 Ast, 2.5 TO, 1.2 Stl
Scored 26 Pts, helping beat #2 AU in O'Dome.
Hit the buzzer-beater 3 to knock off tOSU at the in-season Tourney.
For a small school xfer, he did an excellent job imo, plus being solid off the court in school & community. His primary fault was his occasional inconsistency, getting hurry/wild, resulting in turnovers. Every player has their good and bad traits. He was at least acceptable to the iG, going by his stats.

BTW, If that signed incoming 5-star PF has been reading the shit dealt out here to hard working Gator players, then he might have been smart to seek a team/home somewhere else....

And all I said was if he is playing quality minutes we would be in trouble, which turned out to be true....

No doubt Golden told Gatkek his best interest was to hit the portal. He's better suited for D2 or maybe a very small D1 school.

With Jalen Reed coming on board and Jitoboh back the front court is looking pretty good for the first time in a while.
