The majority of us panned the Mike Novell hire. We laughed and said he would be terrible at FSU.

We praised the Billy Napier hire. We were confident he would bring his winning ways and ability to build infrastructure at UF. The result would be a return to prominence.

My question is this. Which of the two is a worse head coach, given their school and conference?

Well if it weren’t for an injury to his QB one would have had his undefeated team in the playoffs and they other will have 3 losing seasons in a row. Not even a close comparison even though neither is really ideal

We are in worse shape BY FAR. I see things Norvell does that makes sense. Not Napier. Now I will also say the game has changed under NIL...but NIL has nothing to do with going BACWARDS when you add talent to your team. And FSU fans are not enamored present time with Norvell, either.

The difference between them and us is that they are truly stuck with Norvell for a few years anyway while we can make a change. So there's that. I have some FSU friends and they're all like WTF in regards to Norvell right now.

While I like Billy as a person he has pretty much lost me as a coach. I would gladly trade him for Norvell.

I think you have a valid point regarding last season at FSU.

However, would Novell have had success if he coached in the SEC? He currently has 3 losing seasons, out of 5, in the ACC.

Would Billy have a losing record if coaching in the ACC?

I think the difference is that Norvell looked really good when he had Jordan Travis at QB. Napier would end up having a losing record with Jordan Travis at QB.

Yes. Neither is a good coach but Napier is significantly worse than Norvell

But, they’re definitely stuck with him at least another 2 seasons unless they come up with 60 million dollars

Go read the FSU writers' opinion of Norvell. What he's doing with recruiting and the portal isn't sustainable and it shows this year.
Mike was extremely fortunate with the portal early on, before most schools figured it out. Playing in the ACC didn’t hurt either. His big problem is HS recruiting. His roster is not very goody, especially with all those misses at QB and on the lines of scrimmage. That’s a bad football team!

I believe the ACC has helped him out. Even his 13-1 season last year there were two games, BC and Clemson that FSU should have lost. Had he been in the ACC, I think he drops some of those games.

And they'll probably be worse next year unless they crush it in the portal. They're set to lose 10 starters from the worst offense in the Power 4, and will probably lose 6 starters from their defense. They open next season at home vs Bama.

I’d take Floridas current situation over FSUs right now by 1000x. They are stuck in a conference that’s lesser than with a coach they can’t fire. Their magical season last year netted them nothing (I count an ACC championship as worth zilch) of significance and the lasting impression of them was a 63-3 thrashing. That said Norvell is a way better coach than Simple Billy who, if he is still the coach in early November, will likely get thrashed by that same UGA team worse than 63-3.

I think Napier is the worst coach by a wide margin. Norvell has taken a very risky approach, boom or bust, utilizing the portal. He's going to have trouble consistently filling the roster with talent and keeping the program focused and with a good culture. But when he does he will win the ACC cuz it sucks. Billy won't ever win here

I don’t think Billy would have success in the ACC either. He’s 0-2 vs fsu, 0-1 vs Miami, and it’s not like he’s lighting up the bottom of the SEC either. He’s split with with Vandy, 0-2 vs Kentucky, split with Tenn,, barely scored 20 vs Charlotte last year, struggled for the majority of the game with Samford this year…he’s awful…

Norvell was coach of the year last year, but his FSU record when he does NOT have Jordan Travis as his QB is 2-11. However, one of those two wins is against Napier in the Swamp. Also...

Billy MAY have one last chance to avoid one of the most ignominious stats in UF history..

Billy vs FSU: 0-2
Greg Knox: 1-0
