If you would have asked me who the one player on the team would be that wouldn't care about NIL and would be a Gator no matter what, I would have said Jack Pyburn. He grew up a Gator. Today he announced he was going to the portal. Whether he decides to go through with that decision or we pay him enough to come back, this should signify that decisions made about players coming to Florida or leaving Florida is strictly business decisons. When accepting or declining a job, 9/10 times it comes down to money, so does players decisions on where to play football. Times have changed and these are now how decisions are going to be made by players moving forward.
As it relates to Jack Pyburn, I could arguably say he was our most valuable defensive player this year. Its not all about the stats. He was productive setting the edge, getting after the qb, dropping back in coverage and stopping the run. He was also a tremendous leader in the locker room. He is now going into his senior year and for a guy who may not play at the next level because he might not test well or be a tweener, I don't blame him for trying to maximize his value in his last year of football. Most of these players are not going to make it to the nfl so they have a short window to maximize their value and will look to the school that values them the most financially.
Schools only have so much they can allocate to a roster. Thanks to mostly @SRGators and others like BDI, we are in a good place but we certainly don't have unlimited funds to spend so we have to be wise on roster managmenet and allocation of funds and will have to let certain players find more money elswhere. I don't blame Pyburn for looking for more money and hopefully we will have the funds to pay him what he is asking or get close to it bc of how good of a college player I think he is, but these decisions are the new norm that we as fans must get used to.
I manage a Sales Team and the reps who left for another employer strictly said it came down to money and being offered more at another company. These decisons that are being made in the real world are now being made in college football. IT'S ALL BUSINESS.
