I am actually a little surprised his name hasn’t been mentioned. At least I haven’t been able to find it despite actually searching to ensure a double post doesn’t occur.
Honestly, the name just kind of popped in my head earlier this morning because I truly am worried my 1st choice, Lane Kiffin, would say no to us. Plus, I do think Ole Miss will make the play offs and can we even afford to wait that long to announce the next head coach? I think the only way that would work is if Spurrier or Meyer agreed to be our interim coach.
I do not want to hire a coach that hasn’t won and won a lot in the SEC. This conference is just different. We all acknowledge this….Projecting Napier as Florida’s coach was like an MLB team projecting a HS player will be a star for them. They have a ridiculous amount of draft rounds for a reason. It is just a crap shoot. That is basically what we did. I much rather hire someone who has actually had success in the SEC before and just give him the necessary resources, NIL Money, to actually win a championship.
Gus Malzahn, has actually won a national championship (Scam Newton or not) and had a 68-35 record as Auburn’s head coach. During his 8 year tenure at Auburn he never had a losing record. Yes, he didn’t have a good bowl game record. He was fired at Auburn because he couldn’t beat Nick Saban. Who the hell could?
Honestly, Malzahn’s firing and Urban Meyer’s heart condition had the same 2 causes….they both tried to put a pro-style QB in a spread system and couldn’t beat Nick Saban, and we would all welcome Urban Meyer back with open arms.
Returning back to the Scam Newton incident…who honestly cares anymore? Newton bought a stolen laptop. On a scale from 1-10 crime wise that is a 1. Auburn, paid his dad money. There were dozens of reports of every SEC school paying players under the table back then. It is legal now who gives a crap?
Yes, he won the national championship because he had Newton. All 3 of our national championships are directly tied to a Heisman winning QB. So, that argument is BS.
I like the fact he has been at UCF the last couple years creating recruiting ties. He runs a type of offense that can have immediate success if he has an elite runner at QB and big OL. Not the hardest things to acquire via the portal.
I would still take Kiffin first because of public perception with recruits and overall think he has done a better job with QB development, but honestly resume wise those are the only 2 advantages Kiffin offers over Malzahn IMO.
