Florida recorded two singles victories at the ITA Regional Championships on Wednesday.
ATHENS, Ga. - The Florida men's tennis team posted two singles wins in four matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Georgia on Wednesday.
Francesco Cordova posted a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory against Sam Baldwin (Kennesaw) in the qualifying Round of 64. Cordova moved on to the Round of 32 but dropped his match against Leonardo Dal Boni (Miami) 6-7, 4-6.
Mattia Akcan defeated Kyvan Rietkerk (Kennesaw State) after forcing a third set. Akcan lost the first set 2-6 but took the second 6-3. Akcan dominated in the third set, winning the match 6-1. In the Round of 32, Akcan was defeated by Juan Garceran (Stetson). Garceran won the first set 6-1, but Akcan came back in the second taking the victory in a 6-3 effort to force a third. Despite his effort, Akcan dropped the final set 6-7.
Florida had one doubles team compete in the Round of 64 on Wednesday. Duo Cordova/Johnson faced Ben Hudson/ Tom P. Smith (USF) and fell 6-8.
