DeSantis says teaching requirements are 'too rigid' as Florida moves to let veterans without degrees teach

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said teaching requirements have been "too rigid" for educators.
  • Florida is issuing temporary teaching certificates to allow military veterans to teach in schools.
  • The policy has garnered criticism from educators who said that it could impact teaching quality.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis complained that teaching requirements have been "too rigid" for requiring educators to have "certain credentials."

His comments come after Florida moved to allow military veterans to teach in public schools. The policy has garnered criticism from educators who said that it could impact teaching quality.

"We want you to be able to teach Florida students," DeSantis said in a video on Twitter. "For too long, the requirements to be a teacher have been too rigid with union bosses insisting that all educators get certain credentials that often have little impact on teaching performance."

The state's new program invites veterans to teach if they served four years and got an honorable or medical discharge and clear a background check. They also must have completed 60 college credits (half of a four-year degree) and pass a Florida subject exam.

"Our veterans have a wealth of knowledge and experience they can bring to bear in the classroom, and with this innovative approach, they will be able to do so for five years with a temporary certification as they work towards their degree," DeSantis said.

The Florida Education Association is anticipating over 8,000 teacher vacancies going into the 2022-2023 school year, according to WPTV. In a recent statement, the agency called on lawmakers to ensure teachers get better salaries and schools have "qualified, experienced teachers."

"Every morning our students recite the Pledge of Allegiance while looking at the star-spangled banner," DeSantis said. "It is fitting that the teacher in the classroom is somebody who took an oath and put his or her life on the line to preserve, protect, and defend our flag and the freedom it represents."

Florida Teacher Testing Requirements

  • Hold at least a bachelor's degree.
  • Obtain a position within a Florida school.
  • Submit fingerprints for a background check.
  • Prove content knowledge through degree and course requirements and pass the appropriate subject area examination.

Here's a crazy idea to get more teachers...

Rather than pay unqualified candidates ...how about paying qualified teachers & candidates more?

Gov. DeSantis wants retired cops as teachers

Gov. Ron DeSantis is rolling out new proposals intended to bring teachers to Florida, with shortages affecting districts throughout the state.

One such proposal would take first responders, including former police officers, firefighters and EMTs, from those high-pressure environments and move them to K-12 classrooms.

DeSantis said his proposed Governor’s Recruitment Program was “focusing on our heroes,” seeking to bring former first responders in the way that former members of the military are now eligible for hire.

“We will waive the exam fees for the state teachers certification,” DeSantis vowed, floating a $4,000 bonus for all recruits and an additional $1,000 incentive for those teachers who are addressing “acute shortages” in the classroom.

“Science, ESE, reading,” DeSantis exemplified. “Those are all very important.”

“We’ve got people who served in law enforcement, retired, and now they’re looking for the next chapter in their life,” DeSantis explained.

Education Commissioner Manny Diaz was on board.

“Sheriff, we may be going back into these rows behind you to recruit,” Diaz joked. “What better place to have them than in front of our young people in the classroom?”

DeSantis rolled out other proposals beyond expanding eligibility to former first responders, including a two-year teacher apprenticeship program that would allow anyone with an associate of arts degree to get “real world classroom experience” under a mentor.

“What makes a teacher great is actually being there, doing it,” DeSantis said.

Mentors would get $4,000 bonuses per trainee.

DeSantis rolled out a second proposal tailored to current classroom teachers, a scholarship program to allow current teachers to get master’s degrees so they can teach increasingly popular dual enrollment classes. More than 92,000 students took those classes last year, which allow students to get college credit while in K-12 settings.

DeSantis was in Pasco County Tuesday, at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey, when he made the remarks. After his formal announcement, a reporter asked about recruiting international teachers, but DeSantis did not embrace the proposal.

“I don’t want to go with a foreigner over someone from our communities,” DeSantis said.

In the wake of the Governor’s announcement, Agriculture Commissioner and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Nikki Fried denounced the proposal.

“Let me be clear: we should not be lowering the bar for teachers in Florida. Instead of paying teachers what they’re worth and agreeing to stop politicizing their jobs, DeSantis is trying to let Floridians with no experience and minimal training teach our kids.

“It’s not rocket science: we have a teacher shortage crisis because DeSantis has turned classrooms into battlegrounds to fight his culture wars and divide our state.

Allowing anyone to teach without a certificate will push Florida even further to bottom of the rankings when it comes to the quality of our education, and our kids will ultimately pay the price,” Fried said, before saying the real issue is compensation for currently qualified teachers.

“There are plenty of qualified people who would love to be certified teachers if they were paid enough to make ends meet and didn’t have to buy basic classroom supplies with their own money,” she said.

“This is unfortunately just another fight in DeSantis’ war on public education and kids in Florida.”

It would be great if we could pay teachers more. It would also be great if we could do the same for cops.

Back here in reality, we have severe shortages for both. Short of cloning teachers, what would you have our governors do today?

Also, many qualified teachers are leaving their field due to violence in their schools and classrooms. A few retired cops and military to supplement them may not be a horrible idea, as your partisan opinion is pretending.

Get more qualified teachers by offering them better pay and incentives

DeSantis had enough time to beg police officers from other states to come and work in Florida...why not teachers?

He waited all summer before announcing he would be willing to accept unqualified teachers as a solution?

Also, many qualified teachers are leaving their field due to violence in their schools and classrooms.

So they aren't leaving because the governor didn't give a crap about their personal safety & health during COVID?

So they aren't leaving because the governor threatened & took their funding during COVID?

So they aren't leaving because the governor's STOP WOKE act and Don't Say Gay legislation?

A few retired cops and military to supplement them may not be a horrible idea, as your partisan opinion is pretending.

They aren't qualified.

Should we hire some retired trash collectors to be temporary cops since there's a hiring gap in law enforcement?

Why should we offer the incentive to retired cops & military specifically?
Isn't education staffing important? Why would we limit the effort?

Here's much better idea than DeSantis's reccomendation

Offer the salary & bonus to young people with 4 years degrees who are underemployed or unemployed

Incentivize them by offering a match pay offer on their student loan debt in addition to the salary and bonus

Pro
Lower unemployment - retired cops are RETIRED. Employing them doesn't lower unemployment since they don't count in the figure. Employing young people lowers unemployment

Invest in a long term solution - Rather than invest in a band aid stop gap measure of retired people. How about invest in people who can choose teaching as a lifetime career?

Reduce student loan debt - Through public service we can reduce the student debt problem

If you want to talk about political motives/partisanship

The actual goal of DeSantis is to take advantage of a understaffing crisis to destabilize the public education system and push privatization.

He has begged teachers from other states to come to Florida. The problem is, every other state is facing the same shortages. It's a national issue. My SIL is a teacher in the Orlando area and she's active in the union. She's not a huge DeSantis fan and she called the effort to recruit from other states that are also short "an act in futility."

He also raised the base pay from $40k to $47k.

Additionally this...

Fewer people want to become teachers and those in the field are leaving in large numbers. Just 4 days ago I wrote a report for a teacher who was assaulted in her classroom. She's done, she's found other ways to earn a living because she's scared of the kids and tired of not being supported on the most basic issue...safety.

And obviously $7,000 increase and a $1,000 bonus isn't enough

Maybe he should follow the private sector and offer better benefits and relocation cost coverage?

Or maybe he could try offering to match student loan debt payments for public service

Failing to hire teachers in time for school is nothing but his failure of leadership
or possibly ...his intent

They are focusing on retired military and LE with 2 and 4 years degrees...and the state will then help them become certified teachers.

Why are they focusing on retired military & LE with special bonuses?

Wouldn't it make more sense to focus on retired scientists, mathematicians, doctors, lawyers, and writers?

How about offering young people instead of retirees?

Don't expect a reply.
People like Pedo Pete supporter Ray never ask themselves “and then what?” after their initial idea.

Let the market dictate teacher pay, gut the teachers union, get local and federal government out of teaching and let the schools set the tuition rate. Implement school choice and take the ridiculous savings of government wasteful spending and give grants and scholarships to families who may not be able to pay tuition.

Run the schools like businesses, the cream will rise to the top for great teachers.

Some very uninformed opinions in this thread. Gov can do whatever, but it won't do anything. I've been a HS teacher in an inner city school for over 20 years. I've worked with more than 15 teachers that came from military & had degrees. 12 of those 15 quit within 2 years & 6 quit before the year was over. People think the job is easy...wrong. If you are a great teacher, you can teach the subject matter with in-depth knowledge along with managing your classroom.

I read in one post a teach left b/c of unsafety in her/his class. Well, that person should not be a teacher anyway. Great teachers can manage a class daily even with tough kids/personalities. I've never had any problems & I've been in some very rough schools.

These pay raises that the Gov. signed go to mainly the new teachers & pay for great experienced teachers has not been affected at all. Also, teachers are the only people in Florida that actually pay a state income tax of 3%. No other profession pays that, this state has no idea how to attract teachers. But it's simple... treat them like professionals, don't vilify the profession (which has been done over the past few years), & allow them to have more autonomy in the classroom, and lastly, increase pay for the more experienced highly qualified teachers (heck eliminating the 3% tax would do that for many)

Yep, it'd be nice if Floridians were more informed. This was passed by RIck Scott. Florida teachers pay 3% from their pay checks into the FRS (Florida retirement system) while no other state employee pay in anything (not cops, not firefighters, no one else) while teachers only receive 48% of their pay when they retire while cops & firefighters get around 70%.

I tried to google it to read up on it, but could not find anything. I 100% believe you...just cannot find anything to be able to see what someone was thinking when they instituted it

It was passed (& went to the Florida Supreme Court too) during the economic downturn at the end of Bush & beginning of Obama's turn. It was passed on the reasoning that our FRS needed to be backed up more with funds (It never did because Florida's FRS is & was one of the healthiest in the nation).

Your example didn't make the top 3

But when you make teachers buy basic learning resources out of their own pocket and are unwilling to take their health concerns seriously...

Is it any wonder people are leaving the profession in droves?

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/...e-plan-florida-union-president-175107800.html

The main reasons, according to Randi Weingarten, president of the second-largest teachers' union American Federation of Teachers (AFT), are low pay, unsafe working environments stemming from COVID guidelines, and the politicization of education.

From the same place your offering to pay the retiree cops & military...

That gives you better paid teachers...but fewer teachers than required. They aren't trying to hire these people for the hell of it. There are spots open.

Your idea of paying for teacher's raises out of the budget for open teaching positions is child-like and not worthy of serious discussion. I've got to stop wasting my time on crap like this.

Your example didn't make the top 3

In my defense, that's based on your liberal AF article that listed unsafe covid conditions and the inability to teach CRT to children.

If you want to believe that, cool...but don't expect non-mouth breathers to accept that garbage as fact.
