Junior two-way star Jac Caglianone is the first Florida Gators player to get drafted in the 2024 MLB Draft. The Kansas City Royals selected Jac Caglianone on Sunday with the 6th overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Coming out of high school, Caglianone was a blue-chip prospect. Caglianone was expected to be an early draft but suffered an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery and Caglianone went undrafted.
In his freshman season, Caglianone missed the first half of the season receiving from Tommy John surgery. He became the team’s DH and made an immediate impact for the Gators. Caglianone slashed .289/.339/.548 with 30 hits, six doubles, seven home runs, and a .887 OPS.
In his sophomore season, Caglianone had a monster breakout season and was named First Team All-American. Caglianone slashed .323/.389/.738 with 91 hits, fourteen doubles, 33 home runs, 90 RBIs, and a 1.126 OPS. He also made 18 starts on the mound. He posted a 7-4 record with a 4.34 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 10.5 K/9.
During the 2024 season, Caglianone continued to improve and was one of the best hitters in college baseball. Caglianone slashed .419/.544/.875 with 104 hits, eight doubles, a program-best 35 home runs, 72 RBIs, 58 walks, and a 1.419 OPS. He broke the UF record for most career home runs in the program’s history.
On the mound, Caglianone pitched and started in 16 games. He posted a 5-2 record with a 4.76 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 10.1 K/9. His velocity also began to diminish towards the end of his junior season.
