Football College football is becoming the equivalent of AAA Baseball

Living my entire life in the South I have always been a college football fan. But after enduring even more misery on Saturday I paid more attention to a couple of NFL games Sunday....Tampa vs Detroit and KC vs Cincinnati. Damn, what a difference in every way. The coaching is elite, the players are true professionals knowing their individual performance and being a team player will keep them employed. Is there any wonder that seemingly all the brightest young coaching minds are in the NFL?
College players are gaming the system and desperate teams are paying big money to players that will never make that much money again in their lives (prime example DJU at FSU). And the coaches have to rinse and repeat every year even with their own players. When free agency hit professional sports a lot of people thought it was the beginning of the end. But the NFL has never been more successful. The 32 teams in the NFL generated nearly $13 Billion (over $12 B from TV) last year, CFB with over 130 teams generated about $3.55 Billion (in 2022 from TV...less than $3 B). I don't get it. More games are on TV, there are probably 10-15 more minutes of scheduled commercials on CFB...look it up, timeouts in CFB as long as 3:20 minutes, NFL 1-2 minutes. Halftimes in CFB are 5-7 minutes longer. Play reviews are almost instant in the NFL because of their technology in New York. CFB reviews take FOREVER....thus even more commercials.
That speaks volumes about the quality of the product on the field. I know there are a few major boosters on this board and I appreciate their financial investments in the Gators. But many, many of us have emotional investments that can make us just as miserable. Is it worth it?
I like a lot of teams in the NFL and that list can change based on my familiarity with the players. So their is no emotional investment, only the enjoyment of watching true professionals execute the plans of the brightest coaches (of course there are exceptions.) But based on the first two weekends with in the NFL with the dynamic kickoff it is more of a Nonstop Fun League than the No Fun League of the past.
CFB vs NFL is really becoming similar to watching AAA Baseball vs MLB.

Football Another thinking out of the box idea

I’m so tired of BORING Gator football. I believe going to or watching a football game should be entertaining. So what about this:

1) Pay ridiculous money to hire the very best offensive and defensive coordinators and assistant coaches.
2) Hire a full time Game Manager coach. His job would be to tell his Coordinators what his objective is on every play. He would not call any plays. He would need to show a history of having a “feel for the game”, strategy, and game management.
3) Hire a head coach who would oversee all the coaches but would not have the authority to override them. He would be the point man for recruiting, generating excitement within the program and on the sideline, as well as interacting with the Officials and players.

So for this exercise, the head coach would be none other than Ric Flair - WOOOOO. He’s a Gator fan and has been spotted on the Gator sideline in the past. Imagine his interaction with the Refs on a bad call. Imagine his interaction with players who are loafing or appear disinterested in the game.

Just thought I’d interject a little levity on the Board today 😁

Football What does Haiku think? We should do?

Haiku down in dumps.
He thought Billy was the guy
Who brings gators back.

He even made line
Billy Napier clothing.
Unlicensed, of course.

But it not working.
Sometimes thats the way it goes.
Split work for both sides.

There is joy ahead!!!!!
Wait just a little longer!!!!!!!
Listen to Haiku!!!!!

First we innovate.
Give Urban or Stoops the keys
oversee program.

Bring stability,
recruiting, donors, psyche.
Keep current studs here.

Hire proven coach:
Elite strategic planner.
Haiku prefer O.

They lead together.
One on field, the other off.
Lift crystal footballs!!!!

Trump's surge in polls with black voters stuns CNN analyst

This might be very troubling to some on here who reflexively deny reality and think negativity toward the Biden campaign is just made up.

Football Remember How...

The majority of us panned the Mike Novell hire. We laughed and said he would be terrible at FSU.

We praised the Billy Napier hire. We were confident he would bring his winning ways and ability to build infrastructure at UF. The result would be a return to prominence.

My question is this. Which of the two is a worse head coach, given their school and conference?

Football Napier

I am still rooting for this guy to win but if he loses the next couple of games I think it would be a mistake to fire him during the season unless somehow we are bringing Urban back and he can jump right in.Urban is a great recruiter and can possibly salvage the recruiting class and at the same time hopefully keep the Lagways happy .Absent having our new coach available right away there is no reason to go with an interim coach that is currently on the staff.

No surprise Trump was right about Haiti

From bad to much worse.

A total understatement to say that country is a schittt hole.

So where are all you Haiti loving douches now?

If a new coach comes end, will he get rid of everyone in the building? I truly believe there is a lot of good people in the building. Napier may not have hired the best coaches, but the support staff I think has some stars. Katie Turner, Joe Hamilton, Jake Sankal, Tyler Miles, Bri Wade Jacob Lafrance. I don't think it would be wise for a new head coach to get rid of everyone in the building. The biggest issues are the football coaching piece and game management , not the structure and organization of the football program. The Offensive Scheme, the offensive and defensive line, the type of players we bring in all need an overhaul, but the bones of the program outside of gameday does not need a complee overhaul. I hope the new coach has an open mind before getting rid of everybody and changing everything.

Football New Idea from Matt Barrie and Paul Finebaum for UF

I was listening to Matt Barrie's show. Matt is the host of ESPN's College Football Final. He had Paul Finebaum on as a guest and they were talking about our situation.

Matt suggested a "rent-a-coach" idea and mentioned Urban's name. Bring him on as an "Over Seer" or Advisor for the program mid year after we let Billy go. He would effectively act as a coach but wouldn't be responsible for our wins and losses. In other words, it wouldn't count against him much like a Relief Pitcher who comes into the game with runners already on base. When we fire Billy, name an Interim coach from the staff and have Urban there as an Advisor. Urban could keep the current roster on board, those we want to keep anyway, and also attempt to maintain our recruiting class.

Now if Urban had any real interest in staying on as the new Head Coach, then have those discussions, or not, but this way we can hopfully mitigate the fallout from a new coaching hire, which has never been done before during the 12 Team Playoff era. If we pursue Lane, we'll likely have to wait until the second week of January to name him as our coach and as we all know, that's past the window for the Portal and ESD.

Naming a temporary coach or custodian of the program, if you will, might be the way around that. Just a thought but one I thought warranted some discussion.

Football 3 Things Must Occur for the Football Program to Become Elite Again

Hiring a football coach is an inexact science. I don't blame Stricklin for hiring Napier as I thought it was a good hire at the time. However three of the main reason Napier has not succeeded are because he:
1. Has not recruited or developed elite offensive lineman. (Only 1 truly elite lineman and that was Ocyrus Torrence)
2. Has not recruited or developed any elite defensive lineman
3. Has an outdated and predictable offensive scheme

When hiring the next coach, we have to figure out how to have make sure we have all 3 of these things. #1 and #2 will take a lot of NIL money. #3 will take an innovative head coach or OC.

One thing that is special about Florida is that they have a history of success in all sports. In a new NIL world and to get back to the top of football, would you be willing to sacrifice success in other sports to go all in on football. I don't believe we have gone all in on football even though Napier was given everything he wanted.

New Story Grits Notes

I had notes about the game but deleted most of them because they weren’t important anymore. Still, I did keep these…

Hindsight being 20/20, we should’ve made Bateman the DC instead of hiring Armstrong. In foresight, that probably would’ve only been for 2 years before his job was in jeopardy.

I stay away from absolute statements, but we do not have a single interior DL worthy of starting in the SEC.

After such a phenomenal spring game, Jaden Baugh has what, a dozen carries in three games?

On to the headline…

I wish Billy Napier nothing but the best, I have ZERO ill will towards him. I believe that he poured all of his heart and his will into trying to make us a better football team. I believe he gave 100%. I respect anyone who pours everything he has out for my Gators. But it wasn’t good enough and now he’s done.

I’m also angry at Billy because, had he been willing to try some things differently, this could’ve worked really well. But he didn’t and it hasn’t. It’s over and it’s nobody’s fault but his. He saw what was happening and stubbornly trusted his process to work out in the end and refused to relinquish control. So long Billy, thanks for the upgrade in infrastructure.

One of the most entertaining things about the run up to a new coach is seeing the names that don’t have a chance in hell of being hired here. Most people are just speculating but it’s funny because others are the same ones who were screaming about hiring a G5 coach last time but then they’ll post “What about [insert name here ]?” who is also from the G5 or some lower division.

There’s going to be a lot of information being thrown around, we’re going to see a lot of posts about “I know someone who knows someone who knows someone…”. Nobody, outside of a very close few at the top, know who they’re talking to, and who it is. Still, speculation and rumors are the heartbeat of the message board community.

You know who the real winner is here? Rivals. During a coaching search the clicks go orbital.

We are so bad my favorite game is when the teams that recently beat us play a team with a pulse again

They go crazy on social media because even though we suck, everyone still thinks of beating Florida as a “we’re here” moment.

Miami doesn’t play a team with a pulse until playing at Cal on October 5th.
Texas A&M plays Arkansas September 28th.

About 95% of the time they lose and it’s sadly the only thing that brings me joy since we cannot win our own games.
